Years passed and his fishing his ability improved. He occasionally got the odd boot once and a while, but still caught enough fish to sell and make a good life for himself. One day in his old age, while walking out along the docks, he saw the same diamond washed up on the beach. The years at sea had softened its sharp corners and worked away the dirt and muck he himself could not scrub away. He smiled at it then tossed it back into the ocean.

Eventually after not fishing for a couple of days, and in a hunger-fueled fury, he tossed it back into the sea, cursing it for cutting him and its inability to be cleaned. Then he went back to fishing.
